Youth Sportsmanship
Winners Announced
The Youth Bowling season concluded with the annual fun day on April 5, 2008 at Iris Bowling Center.
All of the bowlers receive prizes and awards for their participation in the league. Included in the days events is the announcement of the annual winners of the "Bob Russell Memorial Sportsmanship Award." This is award to the outstanding junior bowlers of the year.
The Junior/Senior league winner this year was Elliot Carlson. The Bantam/Prep winner was Brock Palar. Palar is the first bowler to win the award in consecutive years. To see all the past winners of the award please visit the Bob Russell Memorial Sportsmanship Award page.
IBC and the Mt. Pleasant USBC wish to thank all of the Youth and their parents for their participation in Youth bowling in our area. Good Luck to those participating in the Youth State Tournament in the upcoming weeks. We hope to see you again in the Fall.
Another Youth Bowler Posts 270 + Game in League Play
Saturday March 15, 2008 saw yet another 600 series with a big game come out of the Junior/Senior Youth League at Iris Bowling Center.
Elliott Carlson had his highest career game with a 275, and perhaps his highest career series with a 615. Carlson did have a 612 series last year in the Youth League.
Carlson, who is a local wrestler, spends much of the bowling season having to pre or post-bowl his league games because of his extracurricular activities. It was great that he was able to have his game and series during the scheduled league time, so that the other bowlers could see another 270 game this season.
This is the second 270 game from the youth this season, the first being from Daniel Ruth. The 600 series is the fifth such series posted this season, with Ruth and Kevin Wesely each having two.
Great job Elliott, and we hope there are many more big games in your future.
Local Youth Qualify Three to Advance to Pepsi Tournament State Roll-Off
District 10 competition for the Pepsi Tournament was held in very snowy Oskaloosa, IA on February 9 & 10. Three of our Youth Bowlers will advance onto the State finals held at Cadillac Bowl in Waterloo, March 29 & 30.
Qualifying was Danielle Broeker, who finished in first place in the Girls' 11 and Under. Tasha Glover, third place in the Girls' 11 and Under. Our final qualifier was Rachel Yenter, fourth place in the Girls 12' and Over. Many of our Youth finished high in the standings, just missing qualifying spots. To see the results for District 10 and the complete tournament please Click Here.
Those that advanced to the State tournament will be bowling for the right to go to the Pepsi National Tournament and for scholarship money. Good luck to those advancing. Congratulations to all who made it to the District 10 qualifying.
Family Doubles Completed at State Tournament
The Mt. Pleasant bowlers may not be bringing home a divisional champion from the Family Doubles State Tournament held in Cedar Rapids. But the local folk were still represented well at the Tournament.
Lisa & DJ Westercamp and Bonnie & Stephanie Ford each placed in fourth in their respective divisions, which was just one spot from medaling. The defending champs in the Mother/Son Junior Division, Cindy & Daniel Ruth finished in 14th place.
Thank you to all those who participated from the beginning qualifying. Good luck in the rest of the tournaments. To see complete State Results please Click Here. Results are from the Iowa State Youth Association website.
Defending State Family Doubles champions qualify for Tournament
Daniel Ruth and Cindy Ruth won their Division of the State Family Doubles Tournament in 2007. The defending champions will be returning to defend their crown in 2008 by winning the Mother/Son Junior District 10 held in Ottumwa this past December.
Other local qualifiers were Lisa and DJ Westercamp in the same category as the Ruth's. Bonnie and Stephanie Ford qualified in the Mother/Daughter Junior category. The State Tournament is in Cedar Rapids January 12 & 13, 2008.
Get up early, go Hunting,
then bowl
This time I'm out on the bread route early on Saturday November 3. I am at a place near the alley when out of the kitchen pops Kevin Wesely. We chat for a bit, says he is going pheasant hunting, so I just assume that he will make up his bowling later.
I guess being the loyal league member that he is, Wesely still makes it back in time to be faithful to his teammates. And on this occasion, is rewarded for getting up early by having his career high series, a 648. Rolling games of 226-166-256, Wesely garnered four USBC Achievements for his efforts. This turned out to be more of an accomplishment then the hunting was, because Wesely told the website that he missed six birds that day. Good job Kevin and good luck to all the Mt. Pleasant Youth.
Daniel Ruth Has Super
Day in Youth League
So I open up the email on Saturday afternoon, October 6, 2007. Youth League Secretary Carmen Miyoshi says I need to take a look at the Junior/Senior Youth League Award Sheet. I see four awards all for the same person.
Daniel Ruth, who was averaging 135 after 12 games in Youth League this year, rolls a 164, 177, then a huge 278. All this for a total of 619. This was Daniel's to date lifetime high. When asked about his day in league, he said "I don't know how I did it." Great job Daniel!!!
Local Youth Compete in the
Iowa Games State Tournament
Iowa Games finals in bowling were held at the 20th Century Bowl in Ames, IA on July 14, 2007. Two local youth advanced to the state finals and placed in their respective divisions.
Nikole Hummel came in a 9th Place tie in the Girls 12-14 Division with a 656. Glenda Miyoshi finished in 10th place in the Girls 15-18 Division with a score of 566.

2008 Iowa "600 Club" Mail IN
Tournament Winners Announced
Local congratulations goes out to Marlys Fear and Lillian Bloom, both of whom cashed in the 2008 "600 Club" Mail In Tournament.
This tournament is open to women bowlers who have bowled a 600 Series in certified play and that have registered to be in the Iowa club. The tournament used scores from in house bowling during a time frame encompassing the first week of April in 2008. Fear, who bowled her only 600 Series scratch for the season during the qualifying, scored a 736 handicap to finish in seventh place. Bloom registered a 718 handicap score and finished in seventeenth place. Jerry Lynn Bloom was the only other local competitor and did not place this year.
Way to go Marlys and Lillian, and hope to see more of our talented 600 Club members participating in the future.
"Bowl for the Cure" results available from the Iowa WBA
Nineteen local bowlers cashed in the the Susan G Komen "Bowl for the Cure" Tournament. Bowlers used scores from local leagues during the week of February 10th 2008 against scores from other bowlers at other houses in the state of Iowa. The Iowa State WBA were the coordinators of the tournament.
Faye Guthrie was the top prize winner in the WBA 135 and below average category. Guthrie's 847 handicap series took first place and a cash award of $50.00. Amanda Davidson was second place in the averages 136 to 155 category and took home $45.00 for her efforts.
Other local winners included Chad Wiley, Craig Sweezer, Kevin Trimble, Martha Lee, Becky Wesely, Merrye Wilhelm, Pauline Spraker, Deb Miller, Amy Hill, Joie Lorenz, Jo Beavers, Laurie Gotsch, Barb Baylor, Lisa Westercamp, Sue Strothman, Carmen Miyoshi, and June Schutte.
I could not find the total that was raised for the "Bowl for the Cure" charity, but by the amount of people that participated statewide, I would assume it was quite a bit. To see more of the results from the tournament please visit this Iowa State USBC WBA page.
Women's City Concluded
In the same way that the Open Tournament was dominated by one league, the 2008 Women's Tournament was practically dominated by one team.
The "Tech Trends" team, representing the Squaw League, took home the Team, Doubles, and Handicap All Events titles from the Tournament which was held February 16-21 at Iris Bowling Center. Members Linda Villeda, Amy Hill, Becky Wesely, Faye Guthrie, and substitute Darci Rose took home the team title with a 3495, squeaking past second place "Cindy's Day Care" by 29 pins. Guthrie and Wesely took the Doubles crown in convincing fashion with a 1504 score. Wesely then took the All Events Handicap championship with a total for nine games of 2263.
June Schutte shot her first 600 series scratch of the season in the Singles event. Her 630 scratch which was 792 with handicap, was enough to hold off second place Wesely to take the Singles title.
Cheryl Bloom took the All Events Scratch with an 1855 for the nine games, which has her averaging well over 200 for the tournament.
The standings and cash may be found by going to the Women's Tournament page.
Cheryl Bloom has 11 Strikes in a Row Game
Cheryl Bloom bowled her first 700 series of the season with the help of a 290 her first game in the Sunday Mixed League on February 17.
The series total was 738. This overtook her mom Lillian for the top spot of High Women's Series this season. The 290 game is also the High Women's Game this season.
She joins Scott Strothman and Bob Sizemore as the other "11 Strikes in a Row" winners this season. Congratulations Cheryl.
l. Bloom Has Second women's
700 Series of the Season
Just a couple of weeks after Lillian Bloom posted the first women's 700 series of the season, she posted the second of the season in the Monday night Gutter Dusters Mixed League on January 28. Bloom's games this time were 225-259-245 for a series total of 729.
For her accomplishments on this evening, Bloom also earned a 140 Pins Over Average Series Award. Congratulations Lillian.
l. Bloom Has first women's
700 Series of the Season
It may have taken a little longer then normal, but the first women's 700 of the season was rolled on Sunday January 20, in the Sunday Night Mixed League.
Association veteran Lillian Bloom posted the score with games of 227-265-217 in route to a 709 Series. Bloom is no stranger when it comes to big scores, having rolled scores of big games and series throughout her career.
The highest women's series in the Association to date had been Cheryl Bloom with a 690 in the same league. Congrats to Lillian and let us hope there are many more large scores from the Women the rest of the season.
Squaw League Bowler Wins Youth Merchandise Raffle
On December 8, Cindy Seberg won the $150.00 of bowling merchandise raffle to benefit youth bowling.
The merchandise was donated by Lillian Bloom, which she won at the Spring Association Banquet. Sponsors of the raffle were Charlie's Pro Shop and the Mt. Pleasant USBC Association.
Seberg is a bowler on the Thursday night ladies Squaw League.

Local Bowlers place High at the Open State Tournament
The Iowa State Open Tournament was held in far away Council Bluffs in 2008. The Mt. Pleasant Association had some of its members place high in the event.
The Booster Team Division saw the PSSI team finish in third place, and the Shottenkirk team finish in twenty-first. Booster All-Events had Harry Wykert and Aaron Dilks in the top thirteen bowlers. Booster Doubles finished with Dilks and partner Laurie Gotsch in seventeenth place.
These bowlers may have been able to feel rested thanks to a bus charter that was arranged by the association. To go to the page with all the official prize lists of the past six tournaments, please go to the Iowa State Bowling Association website.
Town & Country Bowler Allan Miller Rolls 300 Game
Wednesday March 5, 2008 turned out to be a special night in the history of Mt. Pleasant bowling. Allan Miller, who bowls on the "Unknowns" team, bowled his first ever 700 series with the help of his first ever 300 game.
Miller, who was averaging 179 before the start of league play for the night, may have very well bowled the first 300 game in the history of the Town & Country League. The league bowls at 9:00 on Wednesday evenings, and is an Open League. We will do some checking into this fact, but I cannot remember any at least in the last 11 years.
The honor game came in the third game of the series, after games of 235 and 181. The series total for the night was 716.
In getting some quotes a couple weeks after the fact, Miller said that he was "not nervous in the tenth but was in the eleventh frame," and that the final ball in the twelfth frame was "solid in the pocket." Miller, who is 69 and has bowled off and on since he was 16 years old says he was "pretty lucky" to get his first 300, and felt as if perhaps "God was throwing the ball."
This game was a fantastic event for the Town & Country League, the Association, and Iris Bowling Center. This decade, most large honor scores have come from people that you expect to have a game or two of that magnitude during the course of the season. Miller's game was a reward for lifetime of bowling leagues. Great job Allan!
Open City Final Results
The Open Association Tournament held the last week in January at Iris Bowling Center concluded with the Wednesday night Guys & Dolls league being well represented in the final standings.
Tournament winners out of this League were the Team Champions of Men In Black (Gary Ruth, Doug Westercamp, Brian Holt, Justin Malone, and Ray Souder), Brian Holt in Division 2 Singles, Larry Wolf & Jeff Jackson for Division 2 Doubles, and Jackson again in Division 2 All Events.
The defending champions in the Division 1 Doubles were victorious again this year. Verne Schmitt and Randy Herr fought through some inconsistent games to retain the title for the second consecutive year.
The Division 1 Singles, All Events, and Scratch All Events winner was Kevin Kirchner. Kirchner shot around his average for the Tournament, which was good enough to take the prize on very tough lane conditions.
Thanks to all who bowled and good luck the rest of the season.
Kevin Kirchner has 800 Series with 300 game in American League
Tuesday night, January 15 saw a little bit of history made at Iris Bowling Center. In American League, Kevin Kirchner scored games of 225-300-279 for a series total of 804. This makes Kevin only the second person (Russ Nichols) to have recorded at least two 800 series in sanctioned play at Iris Bowling Center. Also, Kirchner ties an Association record for amount of 300 Games (Dave Adams 2005-2006) in a season at three.
I was on hand to witness the event. It was not made easy by the distraction of the continuing ball return problems on the pair of lanes to the left of Kirchner. Often Kirchner would be set to roll only to have to pause because of play to the left. But Kirchner's team was bowling against the blind, so the minor delays were able to be taken in stride.
This was one of Kevin's better technical efforts I have seen. There was only one ball during the last two games that I thought his timing off, but the shot settled fine and found the mark. Kirchner was also helped by the fact that he didn't have a lot of time to think about his bowling that second game...because the webmaster was making him, our president, finally write his "2007-2008 Welcome Letter" for the website (only four months late LOL.)
All kidding aside, it was a great effort. Great Job to you Kevin and hope you and others post great scores the second have of the season.
Results for BVL Mail in Singles Tournament Available
Congratulations to Jeff Lorenz who placed second in the "BVL Mail-In Singles Tournament." His 898 Handicap Series total was good for $30.00 in the Open 171 Average and over Division. For complete results for local bowlers please Click Here.
Kevin Kirchner Scores Second Association 300 Game of the Season
When you're hot you're hot. On Sunday October 21, Kevin Kirchner had his second 300 game in a 12 days.
This time it was the first game that held the honor score. Kirchner held serve throughout the rest of the evening finishing with a total of 724, which was high series in the league for the evening. Currently Kirchner has the high average on Sunday Nights, and the Association with 228.
The night ended an incredible week for local bowlers. This week saw (without counting) around 50 USBC Awards earned. Our local bowlers are waking from their slumber.
Kevin Kirchner Scores First Association 300 Game of the Season
For the third straight season, Kevin Kirchner has rolled a 300 game on the Tuesday night American Bowling League. Bowling down on lanes 9 & 10, Kirchner had a 300 his second game of the evening. His 666 series was high in the league for the evening.
True, this may be Kirchner's second straight 300 Game without shooting over 700. However, when it is high series in the league, that says something for the difficulty of the shot. Nice job Kevin!
Mark Fulton wins share of Open State Tournament Booster Division Doubles Crown
Sometimes being on the sub list is a good thing. Teaming with Larry Stevens, also filling as a substitute, local bowler Mark Fulton of Winfield won the Booster Division of the Iowa State Open Tournament Doubles with a score of 1364.
Fulton has bowled full time for the Access Energy team in the American Bowling League for the past three seasons. Last year saw a great tournament year for Fulton. To go along with his State Doubles Crown he also had a second place in the Handicap Division of Match Games and Division 2 Doubles in the local Open Tournament, and won the Division 2 Singles of the Open Tournament.
More will be written in when I get to talk to Mark.
To view the complete Tournament results please to to the Iowa State Bowling Association website. Please note, anyone that substituted in the Tournament will be listed under the town that the entry was from.
