$60,000
QUAD CITIES OPEN
Plaza Bowl North, Davenport, Iowa, Jul 29-Aug 1, 1977
Berlin Sits Atop Davenport
Making his first tour appearance in five weeks, Mike Berlin scored a
runaway victory in the $60,000 Quad Cities Open.
Berlin, from nearby Muscatine, Iowa, clinched his third PBA title
with an 18-6 match play record, the best of the 24 finalists. He
finished with a convincing 237-pin victory over Tommy Hudson, who
finished second for the second week in a row.
Earl Anthony, the leader when the final day of play got under way,
saw his margin vanish throughout the final 16 games of play. Berlin,
spurred on by a wildly-cheering partisan crowd, grabbed the lead at the
end of the second session of match play and never faltered during the
final round.
Rookie Craig Cutsor, appearing in his first match play finals,
finished third followed by Rick Minier and Louie Moore. Anthony was
sixth.
